Campaign in libraries to promote the selective collection of electrical and electronic equipment

by MaresmeCircular in Consortium

The Government of Catalonia’s Department of Territory and Sustainability and Department of Culture have launched a campaign to promote the selective collection and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment in Catalonia’s public libraries. The aim is to intensify the involvement of citizens in reducing waste and changing the system towards a circular economy, which prioritises the reuse and recovery of waste as new products. This initiative involves a total of 68 libraries from all over Catalonia, four of which are in the Maresme region.

Repair workshops, exhibitions, storytelling, magic and video forums
The libraries of Sant Pol de Mar, Llavaneres, Canet de Mar and Tordera are taking part in this awareness campaign by joining in the organisation of some of its events. Repair workshops will be held to teach how to repair small electrical and electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, headphones or music players, in order to extend their lifespan. Tools will be provided and advice given on how to look after these objects and prevent them from breaking down. There will also be a storytelling and magic show in the selective collection area and open-air video forum sessions where documentaries related to sustainability will be shown.

“Change your mindset. Recycle”
This initiative is part of the campaign ‘Change your mindset. Recycle’ which, with the aim of extending the lifespan of electrical and electronic devices, was launched at the end of 2019 but had to be interrupted due to the Covid-19 crisis. It has its eye on the Sustainable Development Goals of the National Plan for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Catalonia.
It is financed by the Collective Systems of Extended Producer Responsibility (SCRAP): Ecolec, Ecotic, Ecoasimelec, ERP, REINICIA, Eco-RAEE’s, Ecofimatica, Ecolum, Ambilamp who, as they are responsible for producing electrical and electronic equipment, contribute to financing selective collection, treatment and awareness campaigns.
