More than 600 people have already registered for the eighth edition of RECUWASTE, the professional congress on the management and treatment of waste and its resources, which will be held on May 20th and 21st at the TecnoCampus in Mataró
60 speakers will bring to the congress new perspectives to advance through the challenges of waste management and treatment, looking for answers and sharing the best solutions as the sector undergoes a process of transformation
The city of Mataró will once again be at the centre of the debate on the challenges and opportunities posed by waste management, the circular economy and the energy transition with a new edition of RECUWASTE, the congress organized by Maresme Circular, the brand of the Maresme Waste Consortium. The event, which will take place on May 20 and 21, 2025 at the TecnoCampus in Mataró, will bring together more than 60 national and international speakers in a space designed to share knowledge, experiences and innovative solutions.
Under the slogan “Waste, circular economy and energy transition: trilemma or virtuous circle?”, RECUWASTE 2025 aims to generate reflection and provide tools to face a reality in constant change, marked by the climate crisis, the transformation of the economic model and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The congress will focus on five main areas of debate: resources and circular economy; energy transition; ecological transition of the economy; new technologies and digitalization in waste treatment; and the role of local entities in municipal management.

During the press conference to present the 8th edition of the congress that took place last Wednesday, the president of Maresme Circular and mayor of Mataró, David Bote, recalled that Recuwaste has established itself as a reference in the waste sector and places Mataró on the map of efficient management and as a benchmark city in sustainability projects.
The director of the Catalan Waste Agency, Albert Planell, remarked that the 8th edition of Recuwaste comes at a time of paradigm shift at international and European level, where directives require not to waste resources and meet the goal of recycling 65% of waste by 2035. This obliges the government to implement a new law to increase the recycling percentage by 2% per year and comply with the directive.
For her part, the coordinator of the Climate Action and Energy Efficiency Area of the Barcelona Provincial Council, Elisenda Realp, highlighted the importance of applying the concepts of circular economy in the immediate environment of citizens at a time of climate crisis. For this reason, she emphasised the commitment to continue supporting municipalities economically and technically, promoting new models of high-capacity collection and applying cross-cutting policies.
Finally, the director of Maresme Circular, Carles Salesa, reviewed the program and emphasised that one of the points that has distinguished Recuwaste during these 14 years of existence has been the quality content with a double vision; one more general and strategic and another focused on the challenges of the local world.
Knowledge transfer and inspiration
With more than 600 professionals from the sector already registered, RECUWASTE 2025 is consolidating its position as a key space for sharing knowledge and identifying solutions to the major challenges of waste management and sustainability.
Among the activities, the congress will host the presentation of the Territorial Sectorial Plan for Waste Infrastructures of Catalonia 2030, an exhibition of state-of-the-art technological machinery, and a guided tour of the Maresme Integral Centre for Waste Recovery, which includes an immersive experience with virtual reality glasses. The Alfonso Maíllo Award will also be presented to the most innovative work in waste management, chosen from the 10 best projects presented in the call.
The opening of the congress will feature a dialogue between the international reference in green pedagogy Heike Freire and the expert in degrowth and social transitions Carlos Taibo, under the moderation of environmental journalist Maria Josep Picó.
The congress, promoted by Maresme Circular, the brand of the Maresme Waste Consortium, has the support of the Catalan Waste Agency and the collaboration of the Barcelona Provincial Council, and other entities such as the Environmental Forum Foundation, which provides the scientific secretariat.
With this new edition, RECUWASTE is consolidated as a strategic platform for innovation, cooperation and international projection in the sector of waste management and sustainability, being an opportunity to continue building a more circular, efficient and decarbonized future.
