The Maresme Waste Consortium and the Chair of Circular Economy and Sustainability at the TecnoCampus have created a tool to assess the circularity of private companies wishing to join the Mataró-Maresme Circular Park.

The tool, which is innovative in the sector, consists of around fifty circularity indicators ranging from innovation in recycling processes, the use of renewable energy resources and that the product design has a durability objective, to criteria such as the percentage of recycled materials in products from suppliers, the recovery of waste as secondary raw materials and the weight of circularity in the company’s strategy.

These indicators will make it possible to determine the percentage of circularity of a company or project, therefore becoming the first quantitative tool in this field. When adding up all the criteria, if the company exceeds 50%, it will mean that the circular economy is part of its business model, while if it exceeds 75% it will mean that the circular economy is fully integrated into its business model. In the tests carried out so far, work has been done to ensure that companies wishing to join the Circular Park exceed 60% of circularity.

The private companies that form part of the Mataró-Maresme Circular Park will be able to access a long-term lease with advantageous economic conditions, and will have the possibility of generating symbiosis in certain flows among the companies located in the Park or with the Maresme Waste Consortium itself, among other advantages.

The construction of the Mataró-Maresme Circular Park is expected to be carried out in phases. However, work on the first stage has been postponed due to the discovery of archaeological remains of Roman origin on the plot where the project is to be built. A series of archaeological works are currently underway to determine the value of the findings and the impact they may have on the construction of the Circular Park.
