Selective waste collection in 2021 in the county of Maresme increased by 1.07% compared to the data for 2020. Specifically, 48.35% of waste was collected selectively, i.e. 117,035 tonnes, a figure that is above the Catalan average of 46.63% of selective collection.

According to statistics from the Catalan Waste Agency, nineteen of the twenty-eight municipalities in the consortium exceeded 50% of selective collection in 2021. Argentona’s results particularly stand out, with 88.64% of selective collection, followed by 81.79% in Arenys de Munt.

Four municipalities exceeded 60% and are close to 70% selective collection: Sant Pol de Mar (67.47%), Canet de Mar (64.85%), Cabrera de Mar (63.28%) and Teià (62.77%). Thirteen other municipalities also exceeded 50% selective collection in 2021: Sant Vicenç de Montalt (59.18%), Sant Andreu de Llavaneres (58.56%), Alella (56.46%), Dosrius (55, 94%), Sant Cebrià de Vallalta (55.65%), Arenys de Mar (54, 61%), Tordera (54.20%), Òrrius (53.02%), Premià de Dalt (52.63%), Malgrat de Mar (52.02%), Vilassar de Mar (50.60%), Vilassar de Dalt (50.19%) and Cabrils (50.07%).

Only three municipalities in the Maresme are below 40%: Sant Iscle de Vallalta (39.38%), Mataró (34.87%) and Santa Susanna (25.42%).

As for the generation of municipal waste in the Maresme, the figures for 2021 remain practically identical to those for 2020, with a minimal reduction of 0.23%. In Catalonia, on the other hand, waste generation has increased by 1.35%, reaching pre-pandemic levels.

In summary, the figures for 2021 reveal major advances in selective collection in the region. Actions decided at municipal level, such as door-to-door collection, together with the recovery obtained from the residual fraction, allow us to reach values close to 45% of real recycling from the municipal waste generated in the Maresme. A figure which, although still insufficient, brings us closer to the European objectives of reaching 55% recycling by 2025.

Complete statistics at http://estadistiques.arc.cat/ARC/
