The Maresme Waste Consortium has received 1.8 million euros in aid to promote circular economy projects. The grants, awarded by the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC), will finance four infrastructure projects: one for the optimal separation of residual waste and three for the preparation for reuse of bulky waste, textile material and bicycles.

The funding comes from the European Union’s Next Generation funds and is part of the 2022 Call for subsidies to improve infrastructures for municipal waste management in Catalonia. The Maresme Waste Consortium is the local authority that has received the most funding.

Three of the subsidised projects are part of the future Mataró-Maresme Circular Park, a pioneering project in Europe aimed at promoting the circular economy.

Thus, work will begin on a Bici Hub for the preparation for reuse of unused bicycles recovered from public places (clean points, abandoned on public roads, etc.), on the implementation of an industrial space for the preparation for reuse of textile waste and on equipment for the preparation for reuse of bulky goods collected door-to-door, which will be marketed in the park’s own facilities.

In addition, the Maresme Waste Consortium will incorporate a new optical separator for the residual fraction to improve the purity of recyclable materials separated at the waste treatment plant to enable higher quality recycling.

As a result of this call for proposals, 13.6 million euros have been awarded to some fourteen local authorities to help finance 26 projects.

The deadline for the execution of the actions will be 24 months from the date of the resolution of the award.

Projects within the Mataró-Maresme Circular Park
