The Maresme Waste Consortium is working on the drafting of the first Maresme Municipal Waste Prevention Plan, a tool that will make it possible to establish strategic lines and standard actions to facilitate the prevention and reuse of municipal waste in the consortium’s municipalities.

The Plan will be developed over a six-year period (2022-2027) with the aim of reducing waste generation in the region by 26.4% by 2027, compared to 2010. In other words, to go from an average waste generation of 1.72kg/inhabitant per day in 2010 to 1.26kg/inhabitant per day in 2027. Taking into account the amount of waste that would be reduced as a result of the implementation of the Plan, a total reduction of 5,216.74 tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere would be achieved by 2027.

The actions will involve both local councils and the Consortium itself and will be aimed at reducing the different waste streams (organic, paper and cardboard, plastics, bulky waste, etc.). Some of the actions to be included in the plan include: creating a circuit for making use of food surpluses and reducing waste in the catering sector, promoting book exchange spaces in public spaces, regulating print advertising, a textbook exchange in schools, promoting the replacement of disposable bags and packaging, and implementing a reusable tableware and glassware rental service for organisations.

In fact, many of the proposed actions are included in the framework of the future Mataró Maresme Circular Park and its Remake Area, a place for promoting and raising awareness of waste prevention.

The Plan includes the 28 consortium municipalities (Alella, Arenys de Mar, Arenys de Munt, Argentona, Cabrera de Mar, Cabrils, Caldes de Estrac, Calella, Canet de Mar, Dosrius, El Masnou, Malgrat de Mar, Mataró, Òrrius, Palafolls, Pineda de Mar, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Mar, Pineda de Mar, Premià de Dalt, Premià de Mar, San Andrés de Llavaneres, San Cebrià de Vallalta, San Iscle de Vallalta, San Pol de Mar, San Vicente de Montalt, Santa Susanna, Teià, Tordera, Vilassar de Dalt and Vilassar de Mar) for which the Consortium provides waste management services.

So far, of all these municipalities, only Palafolls has a local waste prevention plan, and Mataró and El Masnou have one in the drafting phase.

In drawing up the Plan, the Consortium is taking as a reference the new State Law on Waste and Contaminating Soils, as well as the ‘General Programme for the Prevention and Management of Waste and Resources of Catalonia’ and the ‘Metropolitan Programme for the Prevention and Management of Municipal Resources and Waste 2019-2025’.
