Synthesis gas (syngas), the <strong>renewable gas<\/strong> that remains as the main product of gasification, can be used as an <strong>alternative fuel<\/strong> to biogas and natural gas. The pilot test will estimate the potential for obtaining this <strong>biofuel<\/strong> from different types of biomass and will provide different types of biochar \u2013 the <strong>charcoal<\/strong> obtained during the gasification process \u2013 to study different applications: to <strong>improve composting<\/strong> and <strong>anaerobic digestion processes<\/strong>, as a <strong>biogas purification filter<\/strong>, for the <strong>treatment of aqueous effluents<\/strong>, or for the <strong>improvement of agricultural soils<\/strong> in the Maresme region.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research within the framework of the BIOFORIN project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The research is being carried out within the framework of the <strong>BIOFORIN project<\/strong>, an initiative that involves all actors in the <strong>forestry value chain<\/strong> to create sustainable forest management, promoting the <strong>industrial use of available biomass<\/strong> and generating high value products.<\/p>\n<p>Rural abandonment in recent decades, together with the impacts of <strong>climate change<\/strong> (drought, forest pests and fires), are making <strong>Mediterranean forests highly vulnerable<\/strong> and threatening the provision of ecosystem services of great value to the population of these areas, which in turn are exposed to a <strong>higher risk of high-intensity fires<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is within this framework that the <strong>Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia<\/strong>, the <strong>Eurecat Technology Centre<\/strong>, the <strong>Catalan Federation of Forest Owners&#8217; Associations<\/strong> (BOSCAT), the <strong>Association of Owners of Montnegre and Corredor<\/strong>, the <strong>Vall\u00e8s Oriental Waste Consortium<\/strong> and, finally, Maresme Circular, have joined forces to promote a circular bioeconomy in the forestry sector.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10934\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10934\" class=\"wp-image-10934 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER-680x453.jpg 680w, https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ALAMACEN-DE-MATERIA-PRIMA-EN-BIO2C-DE-CENER.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10934\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raw material warehouse located at CENER&#8217;s BIO2C (Biorefinery and Bioenergy Centre) \/ Maresme Circular<\/p><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Threefold objective of the pilot test<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This pilot test has a threefold objective. Firstly, it seeks to study the technical feasibility of <strong>giving new energy value to forest biomass<\/strong>, consisting mainly of pine leaves and bark from forest management, protection and ecosystem improvement activities in the Montnegre and Corredor Park. Secondly, it aims to analyse the possibility of <strong>recovering municipal biomass<\/strong>, i.e. the bio stabilised material obtained from the treatment of organic matter from the remaining fraction of municipal waste treated at the <strong>Maresme Integral Centre for Waste Recovery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the aim is to study the <strong>potential for using the biochar<\/strong> obtained during the gasification process.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, <strong>the gasification unit located at CENER&#8217;s BIO2C<\/strong> (Biorefinery and Bioenergy Centre) will carry out three tests with three different mixtures of forest biomass and municipal biomass.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Promoting the regional bioeconomy and climate resilience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The ultimate goal of this research is to transform forest biomass, a product that currently has little value, into a <strong>sustainable energy source<\/strong> while promoting the <strong>generation of new bioproducts<\/strong> with innovative applications, thus contributing to a more <strong>sustainable, resilient and circular<\/strong> management model for the forest masses in our territory.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot test, with an allocated budget of <strong>\u20ac316,440<\/strong> (excluding VAT), has received <strong>95% support<\/strong> through a grant awarded by the <strong>Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO)<\/strong> through the <strong>Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience<\/strong> (PRTR), which is funded by the <strong>European Union
