{"id":10246,"date":"2024-06-25T10:39:51","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T08:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/?p=10246"},"modified":"2025-02-20T11:22:54","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T09:22:54","slug":"maresme-circular-investigates-the-feasibility-of-creating-renewable-energy-from-montnegre-forest-biomass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maresmecircular.cat\/en\/consortium\/maresme-circular-investigates-the-feasibility-of-creating-renewable-energy-from-montnegre-forest-biomass\/","title":{"rendered":"Maresme Circular investigates the feasibility of creating renewable energy from Montnegre forest biomass"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The synthesis gas obtained from the gasification of forest biomass offers the opportunity to produce biofuels that can replace fossil fuels, thus contributing to the decarbonisation of society<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The research is part of the BIOFORIN project, which involves the collaboration of six organisations: the Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia, the Eurecat Technology Centre, the Catalan Federation of Forest Owners&#8217; Associations (BOSCAT), the Montnegre and Corredor Owners&#8217; Association, the Vall\u00e8s Oriental Waste Consortium and, finally, the Maresme Waste Consortium<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>The project has received 1.8 million euros in aid from the Next Generation Funds, through the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Maresme Circular<\/strong>, the brand of the <strong>Maresme Waste Consortium<\/strong>, is investigating the feasibility of creating <strong>renewable energy<\/strong> from <strong>forest biomass<\/strong> from the <strong>Montnegre Park and the Corredor<\/strong>. The research is being carried out within the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bioforin.com\/\">BIOFORIN<\/a> project in which Maresme Circular participates along with five other entities to develop a <strong>bioregional management model<\/strong> of forest resources for industrial use.<\/p>\n<p>The rural abandonment of recent decades, together with the <strong>impacts of climate change<\/strong> (drought, forest pests and fires), are generating a high <strong>vulnerability for Mediterranean forests <\/strong>and threaten the provision of ecosystem services of great value to the population of these areas which, in turn, is exposed to the elevated risk of high intensity fires.<\/p>\n<p>It is in this context that <a href=\"https:\/\/bioforin.com\/\">BIOFORIN<\/a> was created, a project that involves all the actors in the <strong>forest value chain<\/strong> to create <strong>sustainable forest management<\/strong> and improve the valorisation of the available biomass.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the <strong>Bioenergy Cluster of Catalonia<\/strong>, the <strong>Eurecat Technology Centre<\/strong>, the <strong>Catalan Federation of Forest Owners&#8217; Associations <\/strong>(BOSCAT), the <strong>Montnegre and Corredor Owners&#8217; Association<\/strong>, the <strong>Vall\u00e8s Oriental Waste Consortium<\/strong> and, finally, Maresme Circular, have joined forces to promote the <strong>circular bioeconomy<\/strong> in the forestry sector.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1.8M euros to develop the project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bioforin.com\/\">BIOFORIN<\/a> project has received funding of more than <strong>1.8M euros<\/strong> distributed among the different participating entities thanks to the support of the <strong>Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge<\/strong> (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the <strong>European Union &#8211; Next Generation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Maresme Circular has received more than <strong>400,000 euros<\/strong> to study the technical feasibility of using forest biomass from <strong>pruning<\/strong> and <strong>mixed organic waste<\/strong> in processes to obtain renewable energy through <strong>gasification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The opportunity to produce biofuels<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Syngas, the <strong>renewable<\/strong> <strong>gas<\/strong> that remains as the main product of gasification, can be used as an <strong>alternative fuel<\/strong> to biogas and natural gas. Similarly, the potential of <strong>biochar<\/strong>, the <strong>charcoal<\/strong> obtained during the gasification process, will also be analysed for use in the composting and anaerobic digestion process, as a biogas purification filter, for the treatment of aqueous effluents or for use in agricultural soils in the Maresme region.<\/p>\n<p>The use of forest biomass as an <strong>energy resource<\/strong> not only allows sustainable forest management that favours the <strong>economic viability<\/strong> of our forests, protects their <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> and reduces the risk of fires, but at the same time offers the opportunity to <strong>produce biofuels<\/strong> that can replace fossil fuels, thus contributing to the <strong>decarbonisation of
